Hello Maggie! By Shigero Yabo, Illustrated by Willie Ito

Shig Yabu was ten years old when his family was sent to Heart Mountain War Relocation Center in Wyoming. Beloved pets were among the cherished parts of family life left behind when children were uprooted, and what could fill such a void? With other boys in the camp, Shig adopted a precocious bird—a scavenger magpie who provided companionship and entertainment in the harsh circumstances of internment.

Colorful and rollicking pictures are provided by veteran animator and illustrator Willie Ito. Following his family’s internment at the Topaz camp in Utah, he worked for 45 years creating cartoons for Disney, Warner Brothers, and Hanna-Barbera.
