Fortunes in Apples Magnet Fortunes in Apples was the promotional slogan of the Owens Valley Development Company, which created the orchard community of Manzanar in the early 20th century. Its name was derived from the Spanish word for apple, manzana. Internees nurtured the surviving trees during the time of their incarceration.
